Happy International Women’s Day. I am so proud of the amazing work we are doing here at Mother Honestly to break the bias against mothers.
I shared more on that this morning:
#BreakTheMaternalBias: the strongest gender bias women face at home and in the workplace. In the post-pandemic future of work, hire and promote women, provide backup childcare, paid leave, flexible work environments and building an inclusive workplace where women can thrive. #IWD
Motherhood triggers false assumptions that women are less competent and less committed to their careers. The “motherhood penalty” also negatively impacts single women due to the broadly held belief that women will become pregnant at some point.
The maternal bias is most obvious when employers disregard working moms for promotions. But it’s not for lack of asking! A 2018 Women in the Workplace study found that “women are negotiating for raises and promotions as often as men, but they do not always get the same outcomes.”
I look forward to celebrating properly together this Friday as we discuss the effects on the pandemic on women and families. Join us!
